As a long serving community GP, I am only too aware of the large gap that exists between NHS and private care.   The starting point for any kind of treatment is of course the tests required to reach a diagnosis.  With extended waiting times for specialist investigations it is not surprising that patients are increasingly choosing to pay if they want these undertaken quickly.   

This is only part of the picture since many patients would also like routine health screening examinations which the NHS does not usually provide and insurers seldom cover under group or personal plans.  However, these screening examinations are often very expensive and well beyond the reach of most people.
