InsideVue Strokescan £80

Stroke is the third most common cause of death in the UK with around 120,000 people having a first stroke. Statistically, just under one third of these patients die within a month.

Non-fatal strokes can lead to significant disability and further strokes. It is estimated that some 30,000 recurrent strokes occur each year. One in four men and one in five women are at risk of having a stroke before the age of 85 years.

Evidence shows that a stroke is both a preventable and treatable disease if it is caught early enough. InsideVue offers an examination to check for the build up of plaque within the carotid artery located in the neck which can be an indicator as to the likelihood of a stroke.

What is a stroke?

A stroke is caused by a disturbance of blood supply to the brain. There are two main types of stroke, ischaemic and haemorrhagic.

A Transient Ischaemic Attack (often referred to as a TIA) or is similar to a stroke and has the same signs, but gets better within 24 hours.  TIA's are usually referred to as mini strokes.
Symptoms of a stroke

The onset of symptoms is both sudden and in most cases severe and require immediate attention.  These can include:
  • A weakness or numbness of the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body - the face will often appear lop sided or distorted
  • Confusion or difficulty in speaking or understanding speech
  • Difficulty in seeing in one or both eyes
  • Difficulty in walking, loss of balance dizziness or poor coordination
  • Severe headache
Stroke risk factors

The risk of a stroke is greatly influenced by lifestyle factors and through good chronic disease management or in the case of a TIA, seeking immediate medical attention.  Risk factors include:
  • High blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Transient ischaemic attacks
